Why Teach Children Photography?

We aim to get kids excited about photography and to appreciate the artistry that can be evolved. We teach kids the basics of exposing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, but dive into creative manual exposure and composition using smartphones and tablets due to the financial situation of our students. Because we teach mobile photography through apps that emulate the manual exposure ability found on professional-grade cameras, our students are able to confidently operate these cameras when they get the chance. This knowledge of manual exposure is essential to get photography-related jobs and create more artistic, creative forms of photography. We also teach basic lighting knowledge to help students determine what type of shot is right for the situation and weather.

What We Teach

Our program consists of short lectures, hands-on activities, on-site photography assignments, and field trips. We try to keep lecture based education to a minimum, because the best way to learn photography is to create it and immerse yourself in it. We strive to make photography appeal to as many kids as possible, and include activities ranging from building primitive cameras to composition-based scavenger hunts to competition-style photo critiques. Our field trips give kids the opportunity to explore their city from the perspective of a photographer, and notice small moments that most of the time appear invisible. Our teachers are high school photography students, allowing us to feel approchable to more students and spark curiosity.
